Incipient Canton of Border Keep
Welcome to the Current Middle Ages
Border Keep is part of The Barony of the Middle Marches in the Northern Oaken Region of The Middle Kingdom (aka "The Midrealm") which is part of The Society for Creative Anachronism, also known as "The SCA", which in turn is sometimes pronounced "Skah". As an ``Incipient'' group, we are sponsored by the Barony.
The SCA is an international non-profit organization founded in 1966 in Berkeley, California, and has grown to over 30,000 members. It it dedicated to the research and recreation of the culture, arts and sciences of Europe between roughly the years 600 to 1600. Our "Known World" is divided up into regions known as kingdoms, and of the 19 kingdoms existing at the time of this update, and the Middle Kingdom is the third oldest, having become a kingdom in September 1969 (A.S. 4).
The Middle Kingdom itself is presently comprised of the majority of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, the lower portion of Michigan, as well as a Scott County, Iowa. The kingdom is then divided up further into regions, which contain smaller divisions such as Baronies, Cantons, Marches and Shires.
Border Keep itself is comprised of Washington, Morgan, Monroe, and Noble Counties in southeast Ohio, and generally meets in Marietta, OH. Bordering on the Barony of Blackstone Mountain and the Shire of Misty Highlands in the kingdom of Æthelmearc (and hence, our name), we also have members of the group which reside in Wood County, WV, who participate in our group due to the distances involved in reaching the meetings in their own barony and kingdom. Our neighboring groups within the Midrealm include the Shire of Dernehealde to our west, and the Canton of Ath Dreagain to our north-east.
You can find more specific details, including the list of ZIP Codes, for the lands granted unto our fair Incipient Canton on this page of the Middle Kingdom Office of the Cartographer.
As the electronic home for the Canton, there are areas which we will welcome you to visit during your electronic visit to our fair Canton. However, just like our real homes, there are other areas where you will explicitly need to be granted access to visit (and hence, you really don't gain much by joining the site without knowing that you will be granted that access). An easy way to tell where you can go and what you can look at is to follow the tabs at the top of the page. There, you will find links to things such as event fliers, our list of officers, some of our artwork and such. But as you visit, we hope you enjoy your stay.
NOTE/DISCLAIMERIt should be noted that this web site is relatively new, and that there are some software updates which still need to take place. As a result, some of the things desired for this site are not yet ready (this is going to require some massive OS builds, taking several iterations of several days each to accomplish). A list of known problems and tasks yet to be completed can be found in this document.
If you are looking for the old web site, you can find it here.
